There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling den, contains 150 slots and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel compound that highlights numerous comforts in addition to the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 table games.
